You don’t really expect to hear the words “kosher” and “gospel” in the same sentence.  But I’ll tell you what, go hear Joshua Nelson just one time and you’ll be amazed at how well those two words go together.  What. A. Performance.  I brought my kids (ages 5 and 6) to this particular concert and they LOVED it.  I personally have never seen people get up out of their seats and DANCE in a Jewish synagogue.  But it happened.  And here’s the proof:

Way back in May I had the awesome opportunity to shoot a few concerts which took place as part of the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival.  Their director, Aron Zelkowicz, contacted me and did not have to ask twice.  I was thrilled to shoot these concerts!!!

The first concert I shot featured an amazing clarinetist named David Krakauer.  I am at a loss for words over his performance because I was BLOWN AWAY at his amazing talent.  This man is the KING of circular breathing.  I’ve just never seen anything like it!

Here are a few shots of the first half of the concert, which included the fantastic musicians of the AGAM Ensemble: Jennifer Orchard and Dennis O’Boyle, violins, Marylène Gingras-Roy , viola, Aron Zelkowicz, cello and John Moore, bass.

During intermission I caught my friend Nuiko looking in my direction….:) And also walking through the photo in a blue shirt is Stephen Baum, of WQED….or in this picture he should be tagged as: Stephen “Photo Baum”.  hehe

The second half of the concert featured the fantastic soprano, Lara Bruckmann.  I had a chance to speak with her after the concert and found out that she plays roller derby with the Charm City Roller Girls in Maryland.  She uses the name “Doris Day of Reckoning”.  Isn’t that awesome?!  I wished she lived in Pittsburgh, because we would totally be friends.

Here is composer David Stock conducting Osvaldo Golijov’s Ayre.

It was a full house!

And here is the latest installment of “Find the WQED Recording Engineer…….”:) I see Stephen at almost every concert I shoot!

At the end of the concert I had a chance to meet Noah Bendix-Balgley, the new concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony!  And I asked Aron to step in the photo too!

THE ZANKER FAMILY (Pittsburgh Family Photographers)

The sky was soooooo perfect on the late Sunday afternoon we decided to get together and do some family photos.  This just isn’t any family.  It’s my family.  My cousins, actually.  But ever since I moved to Pittsburgh, they’ve been like my family:)

I met the Zankers out at Horse ‘N Soul this particular Sunday.  I also brought a bag of apples, a friend, and a fiancé with me.  Here are some of the photos we captured that day:

Here they are being all good-looking and “normal-ish”:

And here, it gets a little hairy….

Back to normal!….

I asked them if they wanted to do a jumping picture, and this is my cousin John demonstrating how everyone should jump.

As everyone was sitting on the gate, Eddie heard us open the bag of apples and dashed over, sniffing about……  Isn’t he a handsome guy?!

Here is Lauren giving him a tasty apple….

Ewwww gross!  Horse slobber!   I love how Eddie is looking at the camera LOL!

He deserved his own portrait….

And here I am telling him how handsome he is.  haha!

KATIE VENTURA, HARP (Pittsburgh Musician Headshot Photographers)

It was a windy, but warm evening.  The clouds were absolutely perfect.  Katie and I decided that we would do her shoot outside.  Best.  Decision.  Ever.

Katie is in town subbing with the Pittsburgh Symphony, so we met up at Carnegie Mellon University (our alma mater!).

We had so much fun shooting Katie.  I was testing the flashes and temporarily blinded my trusty assistant, Tristan:

The wind was blowing REALLY hard, so I kept having to fix Katie’s hair.  The look on my face is priceless.

Here I am telling her that everything will be okay, convincing her that the harp won’t blow away.  Haha!  The wind was really strong!!!

See?  LOL

Ok ok…..back to the REAL photos….

The beautiful harp….

The beautiful harpist…..
